The GRAMMY® nominated Danish String Quartet (DSQ), widely acclaimed for impeccable musicianship, sophisticated artistry, and daring programming, returns to North America with the second round of their ambitious four-year international commissioning project, DOPPELGÄNGER. The project, launched in 2021, pairs world premieres from four renowned composers—Bent Sørensen, Lotta Wennäkoski, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, and Thomas Adès—with four major works from the masterful chamber music repertoire of Franz Schubert. Each concert is built around the new work and its "doppelgänger"—the Schubert quartet or quintet that inspired it. The DOPPELGÄNGER pieces are commissioned by the Danish String Quartet with the support of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures, Vancouver Recital Society, Flagey in Brussels, and Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.
On April 21 at 7:30 pm, DSQ brings DOPPELGÄNGER 2 to Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall with the world premiere of Pige [Danish for "girl," pronounced pee] by Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski. The program opens with the Schubert quartet from which Wennäkoski drew inspiration, Quartet No. 14, "Death and the Maiden" (1824), and concludes with DSQ's own arrangement of Schubert's lied also titled Death and the Maiden (1817), originally written for voice and piano.
Following the concert in New York, the Quartet brings DOPPELGÄNGER 2 to the West Coast, with performances in Vancouver (April 24), Santa Barbara (April 27) and Berkeley (April 29). See below for the full tour schedule.
Programs at the other stops on the tour include music by Britten, Purcell, Schubert, and Schumann; a selection of folk tunes; and "An Alleged Suite" (inspired by John Adams’ "Book of Alleged Dances"), an eclectic mix of music that is both old and new and rooted in classical as well as folk traditions.
