Robert Spano 2022-2023 Season Highlights
Conductor, pianist, composer, and teacher Robert Spano is known worldwide for the intensity of his artistry and distinctive communicative abilities among musicians and audiences. This is Spano’s inaugural season as Music Director of the Fort Worth Symphony, where he has planned a characteristically varied and exhilarating program of concerts, including a new commission from Douglas J. Cuomo and a collaboration with the Texas Ballet Theater.

Fort Worth Symphony 2022-23 Season Opening Night

For his inaugural concert as Music Director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Robert Spano conducts Brahms’ Lyric Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony.

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra / World Premiere by Douglas J. Cuomo

Robert Spano conducts an elegant evening of jazz in this homage to some of America’s greatest music, with a world premiere by noted film, television and concert music composer Douglas J. Cuomo, alongside works by Bernstein, Gershwin and Ellington. GRAMMY Award-winning American saxophonist (and composer and arranger) Joe Lovano joins the orchestra.

Houston Grand Opera / New Production of Massenet’s Werther

Spano conducts the Houston Grand Opera orchestra for a new production of Massenet’s lush opera of unrequited love, Werther, from French director Benoît Jacquot, making his HGO debut in a co-production of Opera de Paris and Royal Opera House.  Matthew Polenzani, one of the world’s most distinguished tenors, leads the cast as Werther in his Houston debut. With mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, an international star and winner of three Grammy awards, also in her debut.

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra / World Premiere by Brian Raphael Nabors and Performance by Texas Ballet Theater

Robert Spano conducts the world premiere of Of Earth & Sky: Tales from the Motherland by Alabama native Brian Raphael Nabors, a rising star whose music has already been performed by some of this country's greatest orchestras. Also on the program is Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird and Griffes’ Pleasure Dome of Kubla Kahn, presented in collaboration with the Texas Ballet TheaterBen Stevenson, choreographer.
