EMERSON STRING QUARTET: FAREWELL PERFORMANCE

In a historic event not to be missed, the Emerson String Quartet says goodbye from the CMS stage with Beethoven quartets and Schubert's Quintet, with special guest David Finckel, who was the Emerson's cellist for 34 years.

ROSE STUDIO SERIES I

This intimate concert series in the Rose Studio at CMS features chamber music for harp and flute, with harpist Bridget Kibbey, whose debut recording on Pentatone is due out October 14, and renowned flutist, educator and conductor Ransom Wilson. They perform a trio by Ibert with violist Matthew Lipman and a quintet by Jolivet with violinist Stella Chen, Lipman and cellist Nicholas Canellakis. The program opens with Mozart's second Flute Quartet and Britten's Lachrymae for viola and harp. The 6:30 PM performance offers traditional seating, and the 9:00 PM performance offers cabaret-style seating with a complimentary glass of wine and snacks.

RACHMANINOV: THE COMPOSER

In the first of two concerts exploring the music of Rachmaninov and his influence in classical music, the focus is on Rachmaninov the composer, pairing his works for voice, piano and strings with those of his contemporaries. Pianist Gilles Vonsattel and soprano Erika Baikoff perform works for voice and piano, and Vonsattel is joined by violinist Benjamin Beilman and cellist Clive Greensmith for music by Rubinstein, Tchaikosvsky and Rachmaninov. The second program (on Nov 4) will focus on Rachmaninov the pianist.

THRILLS AND CHILLS

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano sings Gregg Kallor's "The Tell-Tale Heart" as part of a Halloween-themed evening. Percussionists Ayano Kataoka and Ian David Rosenbaum are featured in music by Bartok, with Beethoven's "Ghost" Trio opening the program.
