SPANISH JOURNEY

CMS explores the music of Spain from the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, curated by violinist Kristin Lee, who performs alongisde guitarist Jason Vieaux, soprano Vanessa Becerra, pianist Soyeon Kate Lee and cellist Clive Greensmith. “What’s unique about these Spanish composers," explains Lee, "is that every single one of them made a point of putting their traditional sounds into their compositions." The concert includes well-known composers such as Manuel de Falla and Pablo de Sarasate, as well as lesser-know voices such as Enrique Fernández Arbós and Fernando Obradors. The repertoire -- much of it new to CMS -- includes a new transcription of songs by Fernando Obradors for voice and guitar (originally written for voice and piano).

BEETHOVEN TRILOGY II: Bruckner's String Quintet

CMS's season long exploration of the influence of Beethoven continues, juxtaposing works from the composer's middle period with Anton Bruckner’s monumental String Quintet. Two instrumental sonatas by Beethoven—including the G-major Violin Sonata performed by legendary violinist Pinchas Zukerman and the A-major sonata performed by cellist Amanada Forsyth and pianist Shai Wosner—provide context for the String Quintet by Bruckner, which itself foreshadows a new era in classical music. The Quintet offers a rare opportunity to experience the talents of a composer known primarily for his large symphonies in an intimate chamber music setting.

BEETHOVEN TRILOGY II: BEETHOVEN QUARTET CYCLE IV
CALIDORE STRING QUARTET
"What cannot be denied is the sophistication and sheer polish—in tuning, rhythm and ensemble—of the Calidore's Beethoven."
Gramophone
The Calidore String Quartet's survey of the complete Beethoven string quartets at CMS—a monumental undertaking following in the footsteps of the Emerson, Orion, Takács and Danish String Quartets—continues with the second of two programs featuring quartets of the Middle Period. The Calidore perform Quartet No. 10, “Harp,” Quartet No. 11, “Serioso,” and Op. 127, Quartet No. 12, the three of which serve as a bridge to Beethoven’s late quartets. BBC Music Magazine described the Calidore's recent album of Beethoven's Middle Quartets (Signum, September 2024)  as "highly collectible," and Gramophone selected it as a recording of the month.

ROSE STUDIO SERIES III

Concerts in the intimate Rose Studio at CMS explore both classics and rarities of the chamber music repertoire. Famous for his orchestral works, Rimsky-Korsakov's Sextet in A major offers an intimate, yet expansive, sound world, blending Russian folk themes with late-Romantic harmonic richness, revealing a lesser-known side of the composer's genius in chamber music. This concert is also available as a free livestream.

ART OF THE RECITAL: JUHO POHJONEN, Piano

Pohjonen has both impeccable technique and a cleareyed approach to music... Complete confidence, a superb performance." —The Washington Post
World Premiere
 of Jyrki Linjama's Prélude oublié
Internationally acclaimed Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen, praised by The New York Times for his "pearly touch, singing tone and sensitivity," is an ardent champion of Scandinavian music, and his recital program opens with a world premiere by his compatriot Jyrki Linjama, who will be in attendance. Pohjonen envisions the narrative arc of his program moving from shadow to illumination, opening with Linjama's Prélude oublié. This atmospheric new work evokes forgotten melodies emerging from the past, reminiscent of a rediscovered Baroque piece tinged with gentle melancholy. “Scriabin's mystical sonatas,” says Pohjonen “envelop us in the dark depths of the human psyche, and works by Liszt and Beethoven offer transformative passages, guiding us from infernal realms towards the celestial, culminating is Messiaen's ecstatic depiction of divine love.”

MENDELSSOHN’S PIANO TRIO NO. 2

An all-Mendelssohn program that includes his final string quartet, Op. 80, composed in response to the untimely death of his sister Fanny and performed by the Escher String Quartet. "It is impossible not to be impressed by the verve and precision with which the Escher launch into [Op. 80]," wrote Gramophone. Also on the program is Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in C minor, a profound work that showcases the composer at his most impassioned. Violinist Arnaud Sussmann and cellist Nicholas Canellakis join renowned pianist Anne-Marie McDermott to bring Mendelssohn's masterpiece to life in Alice Tully Hall.
