Today marks the release of the Danish String Quartet's Prism II, the second disc of their GRAMMY-nominated PRISM series—a five-album project for the ECM label.
PRISM curates a series of musical sets based on the historical and musical impact of Bach’s seminal fugal writing, the final Beethoven string quartets, and compositions which were born out of these fundamentally influential works, including quartets by Shostakovich, Schnittke, Bartók, Mendelssohn, and Webern.
In volume two of the series, Bach’s Fugue in Bb minor from the Well-Tempered Clavier is paired with Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130 and Schnittke’s String Quartet No.3
The quartet states:
A beam of music is split through Beethoven’s prism. The important thing to us is that these connections be experienced widely. We hope the listener will join us in the wonder of thee beams of music that travel all the way from Bach through Beethoven to our own times.
Prism I is now available online and in stores everywhere.
