PRISM V Released to Rave Reviews
“…these releases [in the PRISM series] must qualify as some of the most essential listening of the past decade. —The New York Times
Over the past two decades, the Danish String Quartet have become one of today’s most highly acclaimed and in-demand classical quartets in the world, performing in sold-out concert halls in Europe and North America.
In 2023, ECM released PRISM V, the last volume of the Quartet’s highly-acclaimed five-disc recording series, PRISM, which reflects not only the group’s impeccable ensemble and technique, but also highlights the Danes’ consistently imaginative approach to programming. The New York Times called the PRISM series “essential listening,” and Limelight named it Recording of the Month for August, noting that Beethoven’s Op. 135 has “an affable yet technically immaculate performance full of character and playfulness,” while “the Danes’ passionate reading [of Webern’s Quartet] is full of imaginative touches. Its wispy corners are skillfully negotiated with impressively pinpoint intonation.”
2023-2024 Season Highlights
North American Tour – April 2024
DOPPELGÄNGER 4 – Premiere by Thomas Adès
This season, the Danish String Quartet conclude their DOPPELGÄNGER series, an ambitious 4-year international commissioning project, which pairs a new work with its “doppelgänger”—the Schubert quartet or quintet that inspired it. For the final installment of the project, the Quartet, joined by the versatile Finnish cellist Johannes Rostamo (principal cellist in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra), perform a new quintet by renowned British composer Thomas Adès and Schubert’s final chamber work, the masterful String Quintet in C major, considered one of the classical canon’s greatest pieces of chamber music. The Quartet have had a long relationship with Adès’s music, having recorded his Arcadiana quartet on their debut ECM CD (2016). The project's three previous seasons featured new works by Bent Sørensen, Lotta Wennäkoski and Anna Thorvaldsdottir. The DOPPELGÄNGER pieces are commissioned by the Danish String Quartet with the support of Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures, Vancouver Recital Society, Flagey in Brussels and Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.
