Juho Pohjonen Launches "MyPianist" App

Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen, regarded as one of today’s most exciting instrumentalists, is not only making captivating music in concert halls this fall, he is also launching “MyPianist,” a novel, AI (artificial intelligence)-based app that provides interactive piano accompaniment to musicians everywhere.

Designed and programmed by Mr. Pohjonen himself and infused with his keen musical sensibility, MyPianist acts as a “virtual pianist” for musicians looking to hone their skills or learn new material. MyPianist carefully "listens" to the musician’s playing and recreates the piano part in real time, matching the timing and nuances of the live performance.

Violinist Arnaud Sussman says, “This app is amazing! It will follow your tempi, dynamics, rubato, etc. Every musician, professional or amateur should give it a try.”

Upcoming Concert Performances

Mr. Pohjonen also brings his electrifying performances to the stage this fall in person. He will make his debut with the New Jersey Symphony October 31 – November 3, performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto under the direction of Markus Stenz. On October 27, Mr. Pohjonen will make his recital debut with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, performing music by Rameau and Scriabin. And on November 6, Pohjonen will join violinist Bomsori Kim for a chamber music performance at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco, in a varied program of music for violin and piano by Schumann, Sibelius, Szymanowski, Prokofiev and Waxman.

Mr. Pohjonen began his season with a brilliant performance of the Grieg concerto to open the Minnesota Orchestra’s season, stepping in for the legendary André Watts. The Twin Cities Pioneer Press wrote, “Pohjonen’s fiery first phrases were exhilarating, his accuracy admirable on this notoriously difficult work. But it was his first-movement cadenza that caused me to lean forward in astonishment. It was stark, subdued…aimed at the heart, wafting and haunting while nevertheless impressing with its deftly fingered flourishes.”
